BASILICATA
An Italian hidden gem sat between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas and with a mountainous hinterland made up of forests and natural parks, dotted with fortresses erected on steep peaks, ancient Greek cities and hills sloping down to crystal clear bays caressed by the Mediterranean sun.. The morphology of Basilicata is dominated by mountains and hills with mainly calcareous rocks. The climate, due to the disposition of the reliefs, has continental rather than meridian characteristics, especially in the areas of Potenza and Melfi.
In Basilicata mainly black grape varieties are grown, The Denominations of Origin of Basilicata include the Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG, the Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri DOC and in the Roccanova area the Grottino di Roccanova DOC, in which Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Montepulciano are grown. In the Matera area (Matera DOC) Primitivo is the main grape variety, flanked here too by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are therefore 4 regional DOC wines, only one is the IGT. 8 agri-food denominations, between DOP and IGP, the Pane di Matera IGP.
